Top Ten Fantasy Movie Monsters

Cyclops and DragonOne reason to get excited over Wrath Of The Titans is over the cool looking monsters Perseus confronts in the film. Usually in fantasy movies the monsters are the highlights, sometimes they're the only reason to watch the films. These are the best of the bunch:

Monsters Inc10. Mike and Sulley (Monsters, Inc.): OK they're not exactly scary (except to little kids they're supposed to frighten) but these two buddies are the best friendly monster duo on film.

 

 

9. The Kraken (Pirates Of The Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest): This giant squid-like monstrosity was the best part of the movie and was a real f/x marvel to behold as it destroyed the Black Pearl and wiped out most of its crew.

Stripe8. Stripe (Gremlins): The smallest monster on the list but one of the most mischievous, and quite nasty after it ate past midnight. He and his fellow gremlins really wrecked the town in Joe Dante's classic.

 

Giant bugs7. The Giant Insects of Skull Island (King Kong 2005 version):  When Driscoll, Denham and the search party fell from the log on Skull Island into a pit, these giant-sized insects emerged from the dark to make a meal of the men. These atmospherically creepy scenes were nightmarish and made one's skin crawl.

 

6. The Cyclops (The Seventh Voyage Of Sinbad): Quite an ugly mug with its one eye, pointy ears, horn and terrible complexion. This monster was created by special effects master Ray Harryhausen and was used to menace Sinbad and his crew in this classic fantasy.

5. Dragon (The Seventh Voyage Of Sinbad): The one monster that put up a genuine fight against the Cyclops. It's one of the best done dragons shown on film and a showcase for Harryhausen's skillful stop-motion magic.

4. Balrog (The Lord Of The Rings: The Fellowship Of The Ring):  Only the great Gandalf was able to face off against this giant fiery demon. Beautifully realized thanks to superb special effects, this monster was a true badass.

Medusa3. Medusa (Clash Of The Titans): Harryhausen at his best, his Medusa was both hideous and frightening with her penetrating killer stare and serpentine body. Sadly Harryhausen retired after this film but he went out with a bang with this memorable creation.

dragon slayer2. Vermithrax Pejorative (Dragonslayer): Resilient, deadly, quite a sight to watch and that was before it took to the skies in all of its fire-breathing glory! Hands down the best movie dragons and there are many contenders for that honor.

King Kong1. King Kong (King Kong): The true king of the monsters! He ruled over Skull Island, making natives quiver in fear just from his mighty roar and dominated many dinosaurs who dared to cross his path. Then he literally stormed the concrete jungle of New York City before meeting his sad fate at the top of the Empire State Building. Many other monsters have tried but failed to claim the top ranking and Kong still reigns. BTW the Jackson-remake Kong also gets props for being a king monster and shares this spot.

Honorable Mentions: The following are some noteworthy monstrosities that just missed placing on the list; The Kraken (Clash Of The Titans 2010 version), The Griffin (The Golden Voyage Of Sinbad), The Hydra (Jason And The Argonauts), Talos Statue (Jason And The Argonauts), Maleficent as a dragon (Sleeping Beauty), and Shelob (The Lord Of The Rings: The Return Of The King).

Mass EffectWith the release of the highly anticipated Mass Effect 3 video game fans will have another game to obsess about. Stunning graphics and creative storylines have created popular franchises like Halo, Mass Effect and Resident Evil. These are the best science fiction-based video game franchise to date.

10. Doom (PC/N64/PlayStation/Xbox): The FPS (first person shooter) that made FPSs mainstream, fighting demons on Mars and various other locales has never been more fun.

9. Gears Of War (Xbox 360): On the planet of Sera, grizzled soldier Marcus Fenix and his compatriots battle vicious aliens known as the Locust Horde that emerge from beneath the surface of their world. this game has been very influential in other games featuring third person combat.

Halo 38. Halo (Xbox/Xbox 360): Hugely successfully FPS series that launched Microsoft's original Xbox console in 2001, players suited up as the super soldier Master Chief fighting a collection of alien races known as the Covenant out to exterminate humanity.

 

7. Metroid (NES/Super NES/Gamecube/Wii/Gameboy): Pioneering video game heroine Bounty Hunter Samus Aran fights Space Pirates and parasitic metroid aliens in one of Nintendo's classic franchises.

Dead Space6. Dead Space (PlayStation 3/Xbox 360/Wii): Wonderful survival horror set in space. Aliens that reanimate human corpses into hideous creatures called necropmorphs, as well as alien artifacts that cause people to go insane give this series a feel reminiscent of the Alien and Event Horizon movies.

resident eveil5. Resident Evil (PlayStation, PS2/PS3/Xbox 360): This survival horror classic series that has players fighting everything from zombies created by the T-Virus to genetically mutated beasts and people and animals infected by the ancient las plagas parasites in Resident Evil 4.

Mass Effect4. Mass Effect (Xbox 360/PS3): Epic storyline of humanity's coming of age in a galaxy of some friendly and some not so friendly alien races is reminiscent of Babylon 5, this action-packed RPG concludes the saga with Mass Effect 3.

resistance 3. Resistance (PS3): The FPS launch title Resistance: Fall Of Man has spawned an excellent franchise. Set in an alternate universe where WWII never happened, the Tunguska incident of 1908 caused aliens to overwhelm Russia and then Europe in 1951 and eventually the U.S. in later games.

 

Half Life2. Half-Life (PC/PS3/Xbox 360): Nuclear Physicist turned freedom fighter Gordon Freeman is a thinking man's action hero fighting inter-dimensional aliens who occupy Earth.

 

BioShock1. BioShock (PS3/Xbox 360): Taking place in an underwater utopian city gone wrong drenched in 1940s decor, this FPS with genetically manipulated baddies was an instant classic when released. The highly anticipated third game in the series BioShock Infinite will be set in a city in the clouds in 1912.
